【July 7th】
On July 7th, the approximately 1,300 years old “Okuda Lotus Gathering Event” is carried out with solemnity. Lotus flowers are cut from Suteshino Pond and carried to Kinpusenji temple on Mt.Yoshino. This series of events, including the essential “lotus rite” that has been practiced since the Muromachi Period, has been designated as an intangible folk cultural aseet by Nara Prefecture. This event is also connected to the Japanese tale of “The Frog of one eye”. The story is about a shugenjya, a person who does shugendo(one of a most stricted Buddhist training), and his mother Torame.
On the event day, people costumed traditional kimono sailed on the ship and cut out lotus flowers from Suteshino Pond. Then they were moving to Zenkyoji temple and played the instruments made by triton. With the music they moved to Hukudaji temple to Torame’s grave to dedicate the lotus flowers.
