8月19日（水曜日）、ジェニー・ドウェル リズモー市長が、今年度の外務大臣表彰を受賞されることが発表されました。

外務大臣表彰は、多くの方々が国際関係の様々な分野で活躍し,日本と諸外国との友好親善関係の増進に多大な貢献をしている中で,特に顕著な功績のあった個人および団体について,その功績を称えるとともに,その活動に対する一層の理解と支持を国民各層にお願いすることを目的としています。

ジェニー市長は、1963年にパウロ・グリン神父の先導のもと日豪間で初めての姉妹都市となったリズモー市と大和高田市間の交流を、長い間支持されてきました。

2008年に市長に就任されてからは、両市の関係を維持し交流を促進するために、非常に重要な役割を担ってきました。また、2013年に行われた姉妹都市締結50周年記念式典では欠かせない役割を務め、吉田誠克 大和高田市長とは大の親友になりました。

友好を更に深めようと、ギャリー・マーフィー ジェネラルマネージャーと大和高田市を訪問されてからは、スカイプ中継や手紙のやりとりなど、親密な関係を保つための交流をされています。

「リズモー市と大和高田市、そして両国間における友情関係を築き上げ交流が続いていく中で、私やリズモー市がしてきたことに対して、このような素晴らしい表彰を受けたことをとても光栄に思います」とジェニー市長は話しました。

「姉妹都市関係の式典やイベントなどを通じて、私はいつも日本の方々の生き方や、他人に対する寛大な心に驚かされます。それは、際限なくどこまでも広いもののように感じます。かつては、戦争により引き裂かれたこともある両国の絆を強め、お互いの文化の理解促進をはかることは、私が強い思いを持って取り組んでいることの一つです。また、パウロ・グリン神父の功績により、リズモー市は革新的な市で、たとえ感情が高ぶった時であっても、お互いに共通した土台や共通の理解をさがすことができたと知られています。」

「この度の受賞は、私個人だけでなくリズモー市そのものにも寄与するものです。」

ジェニー市長は、10月8日（木曜日）の午後5時からリズモー市議場にて行われる式典にて、在外公館長より表彰されます。

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs today announced the 2015 recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation, and Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell is among the five names listed on the honour roll.

The Foreign Minister's Commendation is awarded to individuals and groups who have made outstanding contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other nations.

Mayor Dowell has long been an advocate of the sister city relationship between Lismore and Yamato Takada, the first of its kind between Australia and Japan, pioneered by Father Paul Glynn in 1963.

Since she was elected to the top job in 2008, Mayor Dowell has played a key role in maintaining that relationship and fostering cultural sharing. She played an integral part in the 50th anniversary celebrations in 2013 and became close friends with Yamato Takada Mayor Masakatsu Yoshida.

She has since visited Japan with Lismore City Council General Manager Gary Murphy to extend the hand of friendship and often takes a lead role in gestures that maintain the close sister city link, including annual Skype sessions and letters.

“I am deeply honoured by this very special Commendation for my and Lismore City Council’s role in building friendships and cultural exchange between Lismore and Yamato Takada and our two nations,” Jenny said.

“I am always astounded by the Japanese way of life and their spirit of generosity toward others, which in my time presiding over sister city ceremonies and events, seems absolutely boundless. To help create bonds and understanding between our two cultures, which were once torn apart by war, is something I feel very passionate about. It is also, through the work of the late Father Paul Glynn, something Lismore is known for – a city that was progressive and looked for common ground and understanding at a time when emotions ran high.

“To receive a Commendation for carrying on that friendship is both a personal reward and something that reflects on the spirit of our city.”

Mayor Jenny Dowell will be presented with her award by the Consul-General of Japan in a special ceremony on Thursday, 8 October, in the Council Chambers from 5pm.
